Richard Hetherington was born at Liverpool in 1887. He was married, it is believed with grown-up children, and lived at Victoria Street, Grimsby.
An able seaman, he joined Deptford at the end of November 1939 with two other Grimsby men.
Richard Hetherington was killed as a result of enemy action, by reason of a torpedo attack carried out on SS Deptford from U-38. He was 52.
The Grimsby paper gave his age as 54 and said he was married with a grown-up family.
