Patrick Gowgh

Patrick Gowgh was born at Carrick-on-Suir, up river from Waterford in Eire, on 28 November 1893.

He was Deptford’s donkeyman, and said of the attack: “The explosion came while we were asleep. We were shaken out of our bunks and rushed to the decks with practically no clothes on.” (Sheffield Daily Telegraph, 14 December 1939)

He was 46 when SS Deptford was sunk by enemy action, by reason of a torpedo attack.
